Dinner of Christmas Past
It's that time of year again when we start to plan how we are going to decorate for the holiday and plan that special Christmas dinner. Some like to travel during the holiday to visit family or just to get away and others enjoy the same traditional Christmas that they grew up with and have always carried on the tradition. Then there are a few who make that rare decision to try a change from their traditional hum drum. That's where the excitement begins. Imagine this.
You decide to have an old fashioned Christmas, Dickens style. The Christmas tree is up; you make homemade decorations, string popcorn and cranberries to wrap around the tree as garland. The entire house is decorated then it is time to plan the Christmas dinner. A goose with cranberry dressing, green beans, mashed potatoes and a wonderful loaf of homemade bread with real butter, pumpkin pie with homemade whipped cream. The table is set as beautiful as a magazine. You break out the fine china, cloth table cloth, napkins, and a softly lit dining room with beautifully decorated candles in crystal holders.
Of course the Christmas celebration was before every home had a computer or the internet were we can browse for the most perfect recipes and instructions on how to cook a goose. Well, as you can imagine the goose is in the oven and we have no idea how long it takes to bake the goose. It was in the oven for quite some time and when it was a luscious golden brown we decided that it had been in there enough and removed it from the oven and set it on a beautiful Holiday platter. Oh… the table was set so beautifully it could have been out of Better Homes and Gardens. My husband started to carve our beautiful Christmas goose and guess what happened. POOF!!!! It disintegrated in a puff of white powder right before our eyes. Apparently our goose was cooked too long. After the shock we had quite a laugh. Even though it was many years ago, we still get a good laugh when thinking about that dinner. It brings a smile to my lips when I consider trying it again. Maybe this year.
