Selecting an Appropriate After School Activity for Your Child

School is usually the top priority for your child. But structured, routine days with no creative outlets and social activities will not help your child to become a well-rounded person. It is unusal for schools not to have a myriad of activities for children to participate in such as clubs and sports.

The activity your child selects should be one they enjoy. There are some things you should consider when your child decides they want to participate in an after school program.

If you are paying extra for an activity, you will want to know the goal of the activity. After school activities can be fun but they also should provide some type of learning experience, whether it is a specific recreational skill or a social skill.

There should be opportunities for children to interact with their peers, to build their self-confidence, and continue the development of their academic, personal, and social skills. After school activities should encourage children to grow mentally, emotionally, and physically.

The activity should be conducted by a professional staff to ensure your child's safety. The staff should establish positive relationships with your child. There should be a supportive attitude for the child. There may be competion among teams but the goal should not be "just to win." It should be a collaborative and participatory activity. Your child can not grow socially if the activity creates antagonism among its participants.

Sometimes adults forget children have opinions, too. An after school program is only as good as it can be when the child enjoys participating. If you, as the parent, selects the activity without the input of your child, they may not be as enthusiastic as you are about the activity. They may attend but si
t on the sidelines due to a lack of interest. You want your child to be motivated and to participate in an activity and that can be done when you take their thoughts into consideration. Children respond better when you listen to them and show them respect.

After your child has enrolled in an activity or program, ask them about it. Find out what they are learning. Find out if there are goals they want to achieve and if they are being met. If your child is to benefit from the program, they have to understand it and have sustainable achievements. Otherwise, their self-esteem will suffer.

If your child's school does not offer after school programs, you can investigate programs in your community. Sometimes your child will want to take special classes such as dance, gymnastics, or martial arts. These types of classes are beneficial not only for meeting other children and interacting with them but they also offer physical activity that children need to burn excess calories and energy. You can also get your child involved in community activities such as volunteering to clean up partks or going along with you on your volunteer activities.

Homework is important as an after school activity. Encourage your child to reseatch topics that are of interest to them on the Internet or at the library. Academic learning does not have to be structured to be beneficial. By doing independent research on topics of interest, your child will gaian in-depth knowledge that will benefit them.

Do not forget to involve your children in household activities. Most kids do not like chores, but it is important for them to learn responsibility early. Teaching your child to cook is a fun activity you can do together.

It is important to involve your children in after school activities. The programs or activities should be ones that interest your child so that they can benefit from them.
