Reading a bedtime story to
your child helps set the mood for sleep. There are tips on how to do this
efficiently. There are inevitable times when it would be so hard for you to put your child to bed. This is especially true when your child is still very much a toddler. Toddlers are very hyperactive by nature, so you just might find it a bit difficult getting your child to bed.
Fortunately, there are a lot of things you can try out so that you can get your child to bed, and have the right amount of rest he is entitled to. One of these would be reading a bed story to him.
This may seem like an old fashioned method of getting your child to bed, but this is still very effective today. Aside from being a cost-efficient method of getting children to bed, it is also very easy to employ. All you need is an interesting book to catch and retain the attention of your child, and you are good to go! What’s more, bedtime stories actually give you and your child the perfect opportunity to have a few minutes to yourselves and do some bonding. After a long and hard day at work, reading a bedtime story to your child gives you the perfect avenue of rest and relaxation. And if you think you are the only one looking forward to such an activity, you just might be surprised. This is because children do look forward to reading bedtime stories with their parents. This is because it is actually an effective method of getting the parents’ undivided attention for a few minutes or so.
When choosing the perfect bedtime story to read to your child, there are actually a few things to remember as well. Firstly, you need to find a story that is relaxed in nature. Remember that the purpose of a bedtime story is to set the mood right for the child to want to sleep already. Thus, you should go for stories that are happy and chirpy. Stay away from horror stories. This would only defeat your purpose since your child would be kept awake by whatever his imagination can come up with. Children are known to have quite a wild imagination, so it’s better to just stay away from horror stories. Just go for pleasant stories that have simple plots. This way, your child won’t be kept awake after the story is told. Make sure to choose a short story as well. Going for long ones would also keep your child too awake.
When reading a bedtime story to your child, you can also try having soft background music in the room. Soothing music can very well help set the mood, so this is indeed a helpful addition in the scenario.
You can also go for story tapes, if you run out of bedtime stories to tell your child already. For story tapes, it is better to stick to the narrative kind. Do not go for those that have a lot of sound effects. Although these sound effects are very entertaining to listen to, they can actually trigger your child’s imagination altogether. Thus, your child would still be kept up by these animated sounds. For bonding purposes, you can lie next to your child, and listen to the story being narrated yourself. A nice story tape to get would actually be the story of the Three Little Pigs. The story is simple, short, and straight to the point. Your child would definitely be placed into that sleepy state with this story tape.
Reading your child a bedtime story does not just set the right atmosphere for sleep. This also helps your child develop a love for books and literature as a whole. Thus, this is indeed one of the worthwhile events you can try with your child.
