New Challenges In Parenting Today

Do you find parenting today a bit of a challenge?  Believe me you are not alone. Raising emotionally, physically, and mentally healthy children to become future leaders who will actively participate and contribute to positive changes in the society is becoming harder and harder. As our society is constantly evolving parenting today is a great deal different from parenting a few decades ago.

Technology and Parenting Today

Effective parenting today requires you to be fully aware of the world surrounding your children. The world has become highly technical and as this trend continues into the future, technology plays a major role in our daily lives. It is not uncommon to see ten year olds with their own cell phones. It is not only about overspending by making too many calls or exchanging hundreds of text messages. Children are bombarded with subscription services like ring tone downloads, jokes of the day and other similar ripoffs. TV is full of commercials offering these services and all it takes is just a few easy key strokes made by an unsuspected child to make a hole in your packet.

Probably one of the biggest challenges is computer and internet usage. Most kids spend more time chatting online than watching TV. Not to mention the lack of physical activities online chatting is more dangerous than your child may realize. The chances of a child being exploited to sexual predators are greater than ever. And it doesn’t end there. Your child’s inbox can easily become a victim of spam emails with pornography, Viagra ads, dating services and other adult content. Protecting your kids from online dangers is a major issue in parenting today. Luckily, there are many tools out there making this task a little bit easier.

Media and Parenting Today

Media and the fascination with celebrities also wield greater influence in today’s society th
an ever before and these elements affect parenting today because they help shape a child’s views. Additionally, modern popular culture stresses the “self” with all the services designed to personalize the customer’s experience. It’s all about me, me and me in the modern world so it is not surprising that children grow up focused on themselves and whatever they want.

The development of a child’s physical self-image, often compared to celebrities and models is another concern in parenting today. More and more teenage girls want to undergo cosmetic surgery to enhance their physical appearance and look like the people they see in movies, TV shows and fashion magazines - their models of perfection. This goal of becoming “perfect” may also lead to eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia in many teenager girls, which result from poor self-image, insecurities and the constant message they get from media.

Children’s Maturity and Parenting Today

Child experts made it clear that children today are more advanced and mature than children in the eighties, for instance. Children today start dating much earlier, often before they reach their teens. Many fifteen year olds are already sexually active. The problems associated with teen sexual activity are well-known. Not only there’s the danger of sexually transmitted diseases and early pregnancy but sexually active teens are more likely to have psychological and emotional problems.

Those are just some of the new challenges that every parent needs to address.

How can parents help and guide their children and keep them safe from harm? Communication, the basic principle of parenting, remains integral in parenting today. You need to verbally express your love to your children. Listen to them instead of lecturing. Discipline in a firm but loving manner. Develop their self-confidence by allowing them to make simple decisions early in life and do not forget to praise their accomplishments or take note of their good behavior.

Build a strong foundation of love, respect, and self-confidence from the moment of birth so they will become well-equipped to make the right decisions on their own.
