Tips for a Safe Pregnancy as a Vegetarian
Following a healthy diet during pregnancy is very important for the health of your baby. If you are a vegetarian who has recently found out that you are pregnant or would like to become pregnant, taking your diet into consideration is very important. Here are
some tips for a safe pregnancy as a vegetarian.
Get Protein in Your Vegetarian Diet
The main thing that is different about a vegetarian diet is that you are not eating meat, which consists of protein and iron. To ensure that your pregnancy will go smoothly, you will want to make sure that you are getting adequate amounts of these in your diet. By eating tofu, wheat gluten, beans, nuts, and other foods which are known to be high in protein, you will be able to ensure that the protein in your diet during pregnancy closely resembles that of a meat eater.
Never Forget to Take Your Prenatal Vitamin
Getting the proper amount of vitamins is very important for all pregnant women, but this is especially true if you are a vegetarian. Prenatal vitamins will help ensure that you get the right amount of folic acid, calcium, and iron. Vegetarians often do not get enough iron unless they eat high amounts of spinach and other green vegetables. Vegans do not usually get enough calcium, as they do not eat dairy products that are derived from animal byproducts.
Eat a Well-Balanced Diet During Pregnancy
Many vegetarians eat very healthy. There are some, however, who do not follow a well balanced diet. In fact, some vegetarians tend to gain weight because they basically live off junk food and do include any vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, and other essentials in their diet. On the other hand, some are very skinny because they do not eat any fat at all. The most important thing to keep in mind is that you need to eat properly. Including vegetables, whole grains, dairy, and some fat into your diet is very important during your pregnancy. Living off of potato chips and donuts or simply eating celery sticks and carrots while you are pregnant is not going to cut it for your baby.
These are just a few of the things that you can do as a vegetarian to help ensure that your baby is going to be able to develop as well as possible. While your diet does not need to be entirely perfect, as everyone tends to have unusual cravings during pregnancy, it is
best to try to eat as healthy and well balanced as possible. If you do not feel that your diet is healthy enough for your baby during pregnancy, be sure to talk to your doctor for some tips. The most important thing to keep in mind is that you should not feel as though you need to begin eating meat again in order for your baby to develop properly because there are many women who have chosen to continue a vegetarian lifestyle during pregnancy.
