After School: First Job Tips And Advice

There are a lot of ways by which you can improve your chances of making a great first impression when starting a fresh, new job.

Be professional. Come earlier or on time and stay a little later. This shows how driven you are in your job. Nothing can affect your work reputation faster than by reporting late for work and leaving early. Make sure to come to work early or on time and leave not earlier than when most of your co-workers have left. This is especially important when you are just starting out. You may make changes in your work hours once you will have established yourself. But for the time being that you are still starting out, show full dedication and try to pick up as much work as you possibly can.

Establish good attendance.  It is crucial to set an impressive attendance record by showing up every working day, as much as possible. While running into emergencies or getting sick may be inevitable, try as much to make it to work especially during your first few months in your job.

Dress appropriately.  Never undermine the importance of dressing appropriately in your job. Even if your company does not require the prim and proper, strictly corporate look, you should look smart and presentable – you will never know when and who you will be called out to meet with. Being smartly groomed leaves an impression that you are reliable and efficient in work. If you look unkempt, people might think that you are disorganized and are problematic with work. Dressing the part plays a significant role when you want to create a good impression at work.

Exude a positive vibe. Always show enthusiasm in all situations at work. Express a positive disposition for being a part of the organization and show it to everyone you work with. Do not let your personal problems get in the way
of your work.

Get along with your colleagues.   Keep in mind that you are a part of the team. You do not work by yourself – you work with them in order to get the job done. Show them that you can be a good team player. When you get recognized for your performance, share it with them. Give them the credit they deserve too.

Ask questions.  It is but normal and understandable if you may not be that adept at carrying out the company's tasks on your first few days at work. Moreover, you should not act as if you know everything yet. Ask for help or ask questions when you need it. You certainly would not want to waste time and effort completing a task only to find that  it is done the wrong way, simply because you never asked. Usually, when one is just starting out, s/he tends to feel competitive and that s/he has something to prove. However, this can signal a red flag. It is best to ask questions, listen and cooperate. After all, you can never really know everything even if you may be quick to learn.

Take the initiative. In many cases in your first day at work, you will be handed small parts of the task. As you progress to bigger and heavier workload, always take the initiative. Do not just sit there and wait for the next assignment to handed to you – be a proactive. Ask what else needs to be accomplished or offer to do tasks. This shows that you are enthusiastic in your job and that you are capable of doing even bigger and more challenging tasks.

Shun office gossip. Rumors and gossip are but usual in any office environment. Dare to be different and get your nose out of it. Avoid getting involved in any cheap talk around the office – it is only a waste of your time. Also, observe proper behavior at all times as well so as not to be a target of gossip.

Showing professionalism and love for your job can help you gain the respect and admiration from your colleagues. You can even climb up the work ladder faster too.
